Medical Permit requirements

In terms of the Immigration Act 2002 (Act 13 of 2002), a Medical Permit may be issued to a foreigner who needs to undergo medical treatment in South Africa for a period in access of 90 days.

The following documentation is required and criteria apply:

  1. Form BI-1738
  2. Payment of the application fee of 85.00 AUD.
  3. Valid passport(s). Passport must be valid for at least one (1) month after the intended date of departure from the Republic of South Africa and have two (2) completely blank pages
  4. One (1) passport size photograph for each applicant
  5. Proof of financial means to cover day to day needs of persons accompanying medical permit holder, if any, in the form of:
    • bank statements
    • cash available, or travellers' cheques
  6. A letter from the applicant's medical practitioner or medical institution, indicating the reasons/necessity for treatment, the period of treatment and particulars of the treatment plans in the Republic
  7. Details of the person or institution responsible for the medical expenses and hospital fees, if any. Should the applicant's medical scheme or employer not be liable for expenses incurred, proof of financial means or medical cover must be submitted
  8. Particulars of persons accompanying such permit holder
  9. Copy of a return ticket or a cash deposit equivalent to the cost of an air ticket to the country of origin or residence

Return Postage:

  • For applications originating from within Australia - a Self-addressed Express or Registered Post Envelope (only one envelope per family) OR a Postal Money Order or Bank Cheque made payable to the South African High Commission.
  • For applications originating from outside Australia a Bank Draft for the amount of
    10.00 AUD made payable to the South African High Commission. (Fee covers
    whole family / group)

Personal cheques or credit cards are NOT accepted.

Processing time is ten (10) working days from receipt of application if application is complete.

Incomplete or outstanding documentation will delay your application.
