Medical Elective Student
Temporary Study Permit
Persons wishing to complete their medical elective term at a hospital in South Africa are required to be in the possession of a study permit.
NOTE: In terms of the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002) Section 13(1), study permits are NOT required if the intended study period is less than three (3) months provided that the applicant is a passport holder of a country normally visa exempt for ninety (90) days (i.e. Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, etc). Please contact this Mission for other countries.
ALL the following documentation must be submitted:
- Form BI-1738.

- Original Passport with a minimum validity of no less than thirty (30) days after the expiry of the intended stay and with two (2) completely blank pages.
- Two (2) identical passport photographs. Colour or black and white.
- Medical and radiological reports. Radiology reports not necessary for pregnant women and children 12 years and below.
- A letter from the university or hospital which the applicant is currently attending stating that the student is enrolled as a medical student.
- A certified copy of the Certificate of Registration from the South African Health Professionals Council.
PLEASE NOTE: In terms of the Medical, Dental and Supplementary Health Service Professions Act (Act 56 of 1974), it is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE to practice as a medical practitioner or intern or as a dentist in South Africa unless registered as such with the South African Health Professionals Council.
- A letter from the University or Hospital in South Africa confirming that the student has been accepted to complete their medical term at that institution;
- Details regarding arranged accommodation, if any;
- That the applicant has sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, maintenance and incidental costs.
- A police clearance certificate for all applicants twenty one (21) years of age or older, in respect of all previous countries of residence for periods exceeding one (1) year, to be submitted within six (6) months of the application if not immediately available.
- Copy of a travel itinerary (PRELIMINARY BOOKING ONLY, PLEASE DO NOT
MAKE FIRM TRAVEL BOOKINGS), or a refundable repatriation guarantee deposit of AUD 1,500.00. The repatriation guarantee deposit is waived upon evidence of an onward or return ticket.
- Yellow fever certificates are required if the journey starts or entails passing through the yellow fever belt of Africa or South America.
- A fee of AUD 85.00 per applicant PLUS Return Postage.

For applications originating from within Australia - a Self-addressed Express or Registered Post Envelope (only one envelope per family).
- For applications originating from outside Australia - the applicant will
be responsible to arrange for a courier to collect the application after finalization.
NOTE: South African Medical Insurance must be obtained within sixty (60) days of arrival.
Processing time is five (5) working days provided that the application is complete.
