Academics, Researchers and Sabbaticals

Persons wishing to travel to South Africa as a visiting academic or on a sabbatical, require a visitor's permit.

Please note: In terms of the South African Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002), visa are NOT required if the intended research/sabbatical is less than three (3) months if the applicant is a passport holder of a country normally visa exempt for ninety (90) days (i.e. Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, etc). Please contact the Canberra Mission for information on other countries.

Visa requirements:

  1. Application form BI-1738
  2. Application fee of 85.00 AUD
  3. Original Passport with a minimum validity of no less than thirty (30) days after the expiry of the intended stay and with two (2) completely blank pages
  4. Two (2) identical passport photographs
  5. Medical and radiological reports. Radiology reports not necessary for pregnant women and children 12 years and below
  6. Police clearance certificate(s) in respect of all applicants 18 years or older, in respect of countries where person(s) resided one (1) year or longer
  7. Yellow fever certificate (if your journey starts or entails you passing through yellow fever endemic countries of Africa and South America)
  8. A letter from the host organization or institution in South Africa, confirming enrolment
  9. A letter from the foreign academic institution, confirming enrolment
  10. Proof of financial means - in the form of bank statements, salary advice or cash/traveler's cheques available, to cover living expenses during the sojourn in South Africa
  11. Copy of travel itinerary. (Preliminary booking only, please do not make firm travel bookings)
  12. Entry will not be permitted on a one-way flight ticket, unless the person is in possession of a valid Temporary Permit issued for 12 months or longer, a Permanent Residence Permit or an appropriate visa. Visitors wishing to travel into South Africa on a one-way flight ticket, require a visa and repatriation guarantee deposit of 1500.00 AUD per person lodged with this Mission. The deposit is refunded on application and on producing the original receipt once the person traveling has left South Africa.

Return Postage:

  • For applications originating from within Australia - a Self-addressed Express or Registered Post Envelope (only one envelope per family) OR a Postal Money Order or Bank Cheque made payable to the South African High Commission.
  • For applications originating from outside Australia a Bank Draft for the amount of
    10.00 AUD made payable to the South African High Commission. (Fee covers
    whole family / group)

Personal cheques or credit cards are NOT accepted.

Five working days should be allowed for processing from receipt of the application if all supporting documentation is available and in order.

Incomplete or outstanding documentation will delay your application.
