Exceptional Skills Permit requirements

All visa applications have to be lodged in person at the mission in Canberra by prior appointment only.

In terms of the Immigration Act 2002 (Act 13 of 2002), an Exceptional Skills Work Permit may be issued to an individual possessing exceptional skills or qualifications. Permits in this category are issued for a maximum period of three years.

Please Note: Incomplete or outstanding documentation will delay your application.

The following documentation is required and criteria apply:

  1. Duly completed application Form BI-1738 (signed by the applicant)
  2. Valid passport(s). Passport must be valid for at least one (1) month after the intended date of departure from the Republic of South Africa and have two (2) completely blank pages
  3. Fees: Principle Applicant 300.00 AUD; Accompanying immediate family members
    85.00 AUD each.
  4. A vaccination certificate, if required by the Act
  5. Proof of financial means in the form of:
    • bank statements
    • cash available, or travellers' cheques to cover envisaged living expenses until the applicant receives a salary
  6. Applicants must be in possession of a return or onward ticket or lodge a cash deposit of equivalent value to such a ticket
  7. Medical and radiological reports. Radiology reports not necessary for pregnant women and children 12 years and below
  8. Police clearance certificate(s) in respect of all applicants 18 years or older, in respect of countries where person(s) resided one (1) year or longer
  9. A letter from a foreign or South African organ of State, or from an established South African academic, cultural or business body, confirming the applicant's exceptional skills or qualifications
  10. Testimonials from previous employers, if applicable, and a comprehensive curriculum vitae
  11. Other proof to substantiate exceptional skills or qualifications, such as publications, and testimonials

Personal cheques or credit cards are NOT accepted. Incorrect payment will not be accepted; in case of incorrect payment the cheque or postal money order will be returned to applicant.

Processing time is twenty one (21) working days from receipt of application if application is complete.
